Gestalt formation promotes awareness of suppressed visual stimuli during binocular rivalry

چکیده
Continuous flash suppression leverages binocular rivalry to render observers unaware of a static image for several seconds. To achieve this effect, rapidly flashing noise masks are presented the dominant eye while stimulus is non-dominant eye. Eventually “breakthrough” occurs, wherein awareness shifts shown We tested hypothesis that Gestalt formation can promote breakthrough. In two experiments, we pacman-shaped objects might or not align form illusory Kanizsa objects. measure inception breakthrough, were instructed press key at moment partial After pressing key, which stopped trial, reported how many pacmen seen and where they located. Supporting hypothesis, breakthrough was faster when aligned more often pairs if aligned. address whether these effects reflected shape perception, computational model applied pacman report distributions times an experiment with four pacmen. A full account data required increased joint probability reporting all pacmen, suggesting influence perceived cross.

Interactions between binocular rivalry and Gestalt formation
A question raised a long time ago in binocular rivalry research is whether the phenomenon of binocular rivalry is purely determined by local stimulus properties or that global stimulus properties also play a role. More specifically: do coherent features in a stimulus influence rivalrous behavior? After decades of underexposure of the subject, recently this question seemed to be answered in the ...
متن کاملBinocular rivalry and visual awareness.
Physiological studies of binocular rivalry have provided important clues to the relationship between neural activity in the brain and visual awareness. However, uncertainty about these insights has been raised by a recent study showing that the events underlying binocular rivalry occur earlier in the visual pathway than was previously thought.
متن کاملSuppressed Patterns Alter Vision during Binocular Rivalry
Binocular rivalry occurs when incongruent patterns are presented to corresponding regions of the retinas, leading to fluctuations of awareness between the patterns . One attribute of a stimulus may rival whereas another may combine between the eyes , but it is typically assumed that the dominant features are perceived veridically. Here, we show this is not necessarily the case and that a suppre...
متن کاملVisible binocular beats from invisible monocular stimuli during binocular rivalry
When two qualitatively different stimuli are presented at the same time, one to each eye, the stimuli can either integrate or compete with each other. When they compete, one of the two stimuli is alternately suppressed, a phenomenon called binocular rivalry [1,2]. When they integrate, observers see some form of the combined stimuli. Many different properties (for example, shape or color) of the...
متن کاملGrouping visual features during binocular rivalry
During binocular rivalry, portions of one eye's view may be perceptually dominant while other portions are suppressed; at any given moment, overall dominance often resembles a patchwork mixture of the two eyes' views. This study investigates the potency of two Gestalt grouping cues--good continuation and common fate--to promote synchronous fluctuations in dominance of two, spatially separated r...
